Networking and Exchange for Innovative Research [12.11.25]
Recap of the THE Workshop held by the Tübingen-Hohenheim Economics Association in September at the University of Hohenheim
On September 24 and 25, 2025, the annual THE Workshop of the Tübingen-Hohenheim Economics Association (THE) took place in the historic palace rooms of the University of Hohenheim. Eleven early career researchers from the Universities of Tübingen, Stuttgart, and Hohenheim, as well as from the Institute for Applied Economic Research (IAW), presented their current research, particularly in the field of empirical economic research.
Many thanks to Prof. Dr. Martin Huber from the University of Fribourg. His mini-course on the use of machine learning methods in statistical causal analysis was one of the highlights of the workshop. He provided the participants with new insights into modern methods of applied econometrics.
The Best Paper Award was selected from several high-quality research papers and was given to Dr. Jeffrey Yusuf from the University of Stuttgart for his paper “Market Luck: Skill-Biased Inequality and Redistributive Preferences.” In his work, he addresses the question of the extent to which income inequalities, whether resulting from personal effort, random factors, or other causes, are accepted by the population or give rise to a desire for compensatory redistribution. These findings are of great importance for coming reforms of the welfare state that are based on the preferences of the public.
The THE Workshop is an excellent example of how important and essential exchange and networking in the region are for innovative research.
