The paper "Introducing the extended governance of digital platforms: A critical realist approach" by Andreas Pyka, Head of Chair Innovation Economy, and Harold Paredes-Frigolett ist published in the peer reviewed journal "Technological Forecasting and Social Change".

In the research article, the authors introduce a framework for the extended governance of digital platforms. Based on a construct comprising the strategic, ethical, political, and international relations dimensions, the framework allows digital platforms to address ethical dilemmas arising among multiple stakeholders at the macro, meso, or micro level in the “extended innovation ecosystems” of digital platforms.
The framework follows a critical realist approach based on a stratified world view according to which the “extended governance of digital platforms” arises from multicriteria group decisions neither in a macro- nor in a microreductionistic way but rather in a bottom-up, top-down, inside-out, and outside-in integrative fashion.
The authors conclude that new frameworks for the extended governance of digital platforms will need to be developed based on a critical realist stakeholder approach aimed at serving all stakeholders in the extended innovation ecosystems of digital platforms as ends in themselves and not for narrow interests only in order to sustain the business models of digital platforms going forward.
